Three days is short enough that most overpacking is "just in case" items. Here is a simple formula and a list you can adjust.
The formula
Pick one color family so tops and bottoms mix. Then pack:
- 2 to 3 tops (plus one extra if you sweat or spill easily)
- 1 to 2 bottoms
- 1 layer (light jacket or sweater)
- 3 sets of underwear and socks, or 2 if you can rinse a pair
- 1 sleep outfit
- 1 pair of shoes worn on the plane, 1 spare pair at most
Toiletries and small items
- Travel-size liquids in one clear bag (see our quart-bag guide)
- Phone charger, and a power bank if you use one (check your airline's rules)
- Medicines, ID and travel documents in a bag you can reach
- Jewelry you actually plan to wear, nothing more
Group it so it stays findable
Put tops in one pouch, bottoms in another, underwear and socks in a third. You can use any pouches or cubes. Our 7-Piece Packing Cube Set comes in sky blue, beige, grey, navy and pink; we do not list piece sizes, so check what fits before you rely on it for a specific bag.
Where a hanging organizer fits
For a three-day hotel stay, a hanging organizer can mean you unpack in one step. Our Hanging Suitcase Shelves open to 19.8 x 14.6 x 9 in (manufacturer's figure), so compare all three measurements with the inside of your suitcase. It is made for a closet rail, so we don't recommend other hanging points.
What to skip
- "Just in case" outfits for events you have not planned
- Full-size bottles when the hotel supplies basics (check with the hotel)
- A third pair of shoes
Honest limits
This is a starting list, not a rule. Weather, dress codes and laundry access change it. Airlines set their own carry-on size and weight limits, so check yours before you fly. Our items ship tracked in 8–14 business days with free US shipping, so order well before a trip.
FAQ
Can I pack for 3 days in just a carry-on?
Usually, if you stay with one color family and wear the bulkiest items on the plane. Check your airline's size limits.
How many outfits should I bring?
Two or three tops and one or two bottoms is a common starting point, mixed and repeated.
Do I need packing cubes for a short trip?
No. They help with grouping and finding things quickly, but the trip works without them.
