Weekend trip packing checklist (carry-on only)

Packing for a weekend is mostly about deciding what you will not bring. This checklist is built for a carry-on bag and two or three nights away.

Clothes: one outfit per day plus one spare, one layer that works with everything, sleepwear, and underwear and socks for each day plus one. Fold or roll tops and keep each day's outfit together so you can find it without unpacking everything.

Toiletries: decant into small bottles, bring only what you use every day, and keep liquids together in a clear bag that is easy to pull out at security. A hanging toiletry bag hooks over a towel rail or door so the sink counter stays clear.

Shoes and small things: shoes go in their own bag so they never touch clean clothes. Jewelry goes in a small case so chains do not tangle.

Organizing the bag: packing cubes split a suitcase into clothes, underwear and small items. If you stay in one hotel room, hanging shelves let you unpack in one move: fold clothes onto the shelves at home, zip them into your suitcase, then hook the straps over the closet rail when you arrive.
