Five days is a good test of carry-on discipline. You can wear a few things twice, you rarely need a laundry stop, and you can fit everything in one bag if you plan. Treat this list as a starting point and change it to fit your destination, weather and airline limits.
Clothing (the capsule approach)
Pick a neutral base color and build outfits that mix and match.
- 4 tops
- 2 bottoms (one you wear on the plane)
- 1 light layer and 1 warm layer, depending on weather
- Sleepwear
- 5 pairs of underwear
- 4 to 5 pairs of socks
- 2 pairs of shoes (wear the bulkiest ones)
These are common suggestions across packing guides, not rules. If you have laundry access, subtract.
Toiletries
- Travel-size liquids in a clear quart bag (3.4 oz / 100 ml or less each)
- Toothbrush, floss, deodorant, brush or comb
- Skin care, makeup or shaving kit
- Prescriptions in original containers
A hanging bag such as our Hanging Toiletry Bag helps in small hotel bathrooms.
Tech and documents
- Phone, charger, power bank (check airline battery rules)
- Plug adapter if needed
- ID or passport, boarding passes, hotel details
- Wallet, a card back-up, a bit of cash
- Headphones
Extras
- Reusable water bottle (empty through security)
- A small bag for laundry
- Umbrella or sunglasses, by forecast
- Snacks
How to pack it
Group items in packing cubes: tops, bottoms, underwear and socks. A 7-Piece Packing Cube Set covers this, and a hanging organizer like our Hanging Suitcase Shelves keeps things visible. Heavy items go near the wheels, liquids near the top.
Cut-down test
Lay everything on the bed. Remove one item from each category, then see if you still feel prepared. Most people find they pack too many tops and too many shoes.
Before you leave
Check your airline's carry-on size and weight limits. They vary, and some count your personal item. Weigh the bag at home.
