Packing Cubes vs Vacuum Bags vs Rolling: Which Saves Space?

There's no single best way to pack. Each method trades space against wrinkles, weight, and how easily you can find things. Here's the honest version.

Rolling clothes (free)

Good for: T-shirts, jeans, casual knits.
Trade-offs: rolled clothes still shift around in the bag, and it's hard to find one item without unrolling others. Crisp shirts can crease.
Best when: you have no organizers and a short trip.

Packing cubes

Good for: keeping things grouped (tops, bottoms, underwear) so you can find them fast and move them into drawers in one go. You can roll inside a cube.
Trade-offs: cubes organize more than they shrink. A cube adds a little fabric weight.
Best when: you value finding things quickly and unpacking fast.

Compression cubes

Good for: bulky soft items (knits, fleece) on trips where space is tight. A second zipper squeezes the cube flatter.
Trade-offs: compressed clothes can wrinkle more, and a full, compressed bag is easier to push over an airline weight limit.

Vacuum or roll-up compression bags

Good for: squeezing out the most air from puffy items like jackets and sweaters.
Trade-offs: clothes come out wrinkled. Bags with a pump need one on the return trip too (hotels rarely have a vacuum). They can puncture. Like any compression, they don't reduce weight.
Best when: you're packing bulky winter layers and don't mind wrinkles.

Zip-top plastic bags

Good for: liquids (airport security asks for a clear bag; check current rules at tsa.gov), wet swimwear, separating dirty laundry.
Trade-offs: they tear and don't stay organized for clothes.

Remember: compression saves space, not weight. Check your airline's carry-on weight limit before squeezing in more.
