How to Pack a Hanging Toiletry Bag for Carry-On

Hotel bathrooms often have a tiny counter and nowhere to put things down. A hanging toiletry bag solves that by moving your products onto a hook or towel bar. Packing one well for a carry-on mostly comes down to the airport liquids rule.

Know the 3-1-1 rule

In the US, the TSA rule is that liquids, gels and aerosols in a carry-on must be in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, all fit in one clear quart-size bag, one bag per traveler. Container size is what counts, not how full it is: a half-empty 6 oz bottle can still be refused. Medications and baby items have separate exceptions. Rules can change, so check the TSA site before you fly.

Plan the bag in zones

1. Liquids pocket. Put your travel-size bottles in one place. Our Hanging Toiletry Bag has a clear waterproof pocket, which is a natural spot for these. Check that the pocket you use will hold all your liquid containers; otherwise, use a separate clear quart bag and place it on top.

2. Mesh pockets. Use them for brushes, razors, floss, a comb and other dry items.

3. Main compartment. Keep heavier or bulkier things, like a hair tool, near the bottom.

Make security easy

At standard checkpoints, you may be asked to pull out the liquids. Pack so the liquids are at the top or in an easily removable pouch. Do not bury them under a full set of clothes.

Size matters

Ours measures 9.4 x 5.9 x 3.9 in closed and is about 27.5 in long when hung open. That is compact for a bag, but it will not swallow full-size bottles. Decant into travel bottles, or buy small sizes, and leave a gap for shampoo you may get at the hotel.

Hang it up

It has a swivel hook, so you can hang it from a towel bar, shower rod or door hook and rotate it. Test the hook before loading it with heavy items. Hotel fixtures are not always strong.

Keep leaks in check

Squeeze air out of tubes, put a bit of tape on caps, and place bottles upright. Do not rely on a pocket to contain a leak; check lids.

Orders ship tracked from overseas suppliers, free to the US, usually about 1 to 2 weeks.
