Packing cubes do not make a suitcase bigger. What they do is give your stuff boundaries, so the bag stays tidy and you can pull out one cube instead of emptying everything. A reliable system takes about ten minutes.
1. Decide your cubes by category
The most common split is one cube for tops, one for bottoms, and one for underwear, socks and sleepwear. With a seven-piece set such as our 7-Piece Packing Cube Set (standard zip cubes, not compression), you have room to add cubes for swimwear, workout clothes or a "dirty laundry" cube. The set comes in sky blue, beige, grey, navy and pink, which helps if you color-code by person or category.
2. Roll or fold?
Rolling casual items like tees, knit tops and jeans usually saves a little fuss and lets you see each item's edge. Fold dressier shirts flat so they wrinkle less. Either way, fill cubes snugly without forcing the zipper. A cube you must sit on to close is a cube that will pop open or strain a seam.
3. Place heavy things first
In a roller bag, put the heaviest cube near the wheel end and lighter ones on top. In a backpack, keep heavy near your back. Shoes go in a separate bag or in the corners, with socks stuffed inside.
4. Keep liquids and valuables outside the cubes
Your clear toiletry bag must come out at security, so keep it on top or in an outer pocket, not buried in a cube. Documents, chargers and medications also belong in easy reach.
5. Leave a little slack
If you buy a souvenir, you want space. Skip the last 10 percent of the bag.
6. Unpack by cube
At the hotel, drop cubes into a drawer or onto a shelf. If you do not need a cube, leave it in the suitcase. On the way home, use one cube for worn clothes so clean and dirty do not mix.
What cubes cannot do
Standard cubes organize; they do not squeeze. If you need real volume reduction, a zip-to-compress style is a different tool, and our 3-Piece Compression Packing Cubes are made for that. Neither will help if you simply pack too much for the bag's airline limit.
Orders ship tracked from overseas suppliers, free to the US, usually in about 1 to 2 weeks.
FAQ
How many packing cubes do I need for a carry-on? Three to five covers most trips. More cubes just adds more fabric.
Do packing cubes add weight? A little, since they are fabric and zippers, so factor that in if your airline is strict.
Should I roll or fold in cubes? Roll casual clothes, fold dressier pieces. Test with your own wardrobe.
Can I keep cubes packed between trips? Yes. Leave toiletries out, then top up with fresh clothes.
