Hanging shelf organizer vs packing cubes

Both keep clothes grouped. They solve different problems: cubes organize inside the suitcase, a hanging shelf organizer turns a closet rail into shelves. Here is how to choose.

How each works

Packing cubes are zip pouches. You fill them at home and either leave them in the bag or move them into drawers.

A hanging shelf organizer holds folded clothes on shelves and hangs from a closet rail. Ours has three mesh-window shelves, two adjustable straps with hooks, side mesh pockets and a top handle. See Hanging Suitcase Shelves.

Where cubes are better

Any room, with or without a closet rail
Splitting items into small groups (socks, underwear, workout clothes)
Suitcases where a 19.8 × 14.6 × 9 in organizer will not fit

Where each falls short

Cubes: you still unpack them into drawers or live out of the bag.
Hanging organizer: it needs a rail. It opens to 19.8 x 14.6 x 9 in (manufacturer's figure), so your suitcase interior must be at least that big in all three directions. We do not claim a weight rating and have not tested hanging it from a door or hook.

Using both

Put small items in packing cubes (7 pieces, sky blue, beige, grey, navy or pink). If the cubes you own fit the shelves, you can place them there; check the measurements first.
